So, I hung out with my friend Andrew tonight. Trust me, it gets better. Anyway, when he picked me up he noticed I was wearing my Les Miz t-shirt, and he mentioned he had just watched the 25th anniversary concert. I offered to let him borrow my Complete Symphonic Recording after we went for a walk through the woods in one of my town’s many parks. So, we went back to my place, grabbed the recording and proceeded to blast it and belt out the words as we drove around eventually ending up at the 7-11 to get slurpees. At this point I’m thinking the evening is going pretty damn well.
Eventually we landed at Kevin’s house where he had over Sol, Trip, and Aaron. Slurpees in hand we watched them play Super Smash Bros for a while before heading upstairs. Apparently they were going to play a tabletop RPG called Pathfinders. After messing around with the cat and one of the dogs I was convinced to play, which is something I’d never done before. Not really my usual form of RP, but it was a blast really. I was a badass barbarian human girl and with Sol, Trip, Aaron, and Andrew around it’s bound to be interesting. We managed to catch and tame a wolf we have named Metal Mouth.
Well, that’s when the evening took a twist. After pizza, which Kevin’s parents had so graciously offered us and a sinful amount of coke there was a pounding on the door. It was Aaron’s brother and sister. Their how was on fire. We were all in a bit of a state of shock, and Aaron was out of there. Not quite sure what to do we kept playing without him making a number of jokes because we had no idea what else to do. We kept getting calls from Aaron on the status of things. His dog died and the house was pretty much a smoke damaged shell. Apparently the dryer had caught fire. I’m always so paranoid about that thing, and this certainly didn’t help.
We decided that if when we saw Aaron he was joking a bit about the whole thing that we’d all buy him something. Sol suggested a hose, and that was dismissed. We eventually decided on a super-soaker filled with candy. Eventually, Trip had to go home, and Andrew and I decided to drive over to Aaron’s place to check on him and see the damage. He seemed to be in good enough spirits, but I don’t know if that’s just his defense mechanism or denial or if he’s really ok. Nick was there and we talked for a while. The house was still standing but that’s about it from what I gathered.
We all felt a bit awkward because before we’d switched Aaron’s wizard character’s class to fire. Trip put it the best. There are only three things you can count on in life. Death, taxes, and irony.
After that in an attempt to clear our heads Andrew and I headed over to a different local park (after midnight now) with Les Miserables still blasting and essentially singing our lungs out. I found myself getting more emotions than general from it, but I’ll allow myself that. We got to the park to watch a see of fireflies in the dark and discuss the evening’s happenings. Eventually, he dropped me off at home, and I told the whole thing to my dad. Needless to say he was quite surprised.
And now I’m here. This night has been an adventure of both new, fun, adventures, and horrible, unfortunate, irony.
Volunteered at the soup kitchen today for the first time in a while
I’d forgotten how exhausting it is. Still, it felt good to be back after being away for so long. 276 people served today I think…cripes, I have no idea how we do it. It’s just a whirlwind of activity, and then it’s over. Phew…I’m surprised how much of the routine I remembered though, and a friend of mine was there, so I wasn’t the only college age person there since the place is run by essentially middle to high schoolers and some adult advisers.
I think I’ll go back next week as well. I really enjoy volunteering there.
